What Is Emotional Quotient?

From time immemorial, people have used ‘Intelligence Quotient’ or what is more popularly referred to as IQ to measure an individual’s success. The numbers are rampantly used in many walks of life as a determining factor. However, in the more recent years, research has also started revolving around ‘Emotional Intelligence Quotient’ or EQ. That is because EQ has been proved to cause behavioral, structural and psychological changes in an individual, thereby contributing to his success.

History of EQ

Although, many psychologists have worked on the concept and given it their indelible impressions, the term was propounded by Dr. John Mayer and Dr. Peter Salovey to explain the ability of an individual to comprehend emotions of self and others to act suitably in a given situation or at a given point in time. It was then stated that healthy emotional intelligence is essential to lead a successful and happy life. Your ability to communicate, decide and comprehend increases manifold due to a higher EQ.

There are two schools of thought when it comes deciphering the relationship between EQ and an individual. While some researchers state that EQ can be nurtured and developed along the way, few others strongly believe that EQ is innate. However, most reach a consensus on the former. There are myriad testing instruments that have been specifically designed to determine your emotional intelligence quotient. But, there are variations in their content and approach.
