Top 10 Tips on How to Control Anger at Work
Along with positive emotions in our life such as love and kindness, there exist the bad ones too like jealousy, envy and the worst of all – anger. Anger, if not controlled can lead to horrible consequences. When a person is angry, he/she does not know the difference between right and wrong. Anger is such a powerful emotion that it clouds the boundaries of what is logical and what is irrational. But when anger surpasses your personal life and enters your professional life, that’s a sign of danger. There are simple ways to control your anger; you just need to master them. Learn how to control anger right here.
1. Take deep breaths
Take several deep breaths to calm your nerves and relax yourself. Another important thing is to take deep breaths from deep inside you or your ‘gut’ instead of your chest. Feel the breaths you take and focus on deep breathing. This will take your mind off your anger.
2. Say calming words
Saying words like ‘relax’, ‘calm down’, ‘take it easy’ and ‘control’ helps you to channel your mind and energy away from anger.
3. Stay calm and silent
Okay, this might not be as easy to pull of as it sounds, but you have to do it. Don’t speak to anyone else when you’re angry. Only speak to yourself and say those above mentioned words to yourself over and over again. If you speak, chances are you might say something that you will regret later.
4. Don’t use negative sounding words
If you must speak, either to your boss or colleague, avoid using negative words such as ‘never’, ‘no’ and ‘always’. For instance, passing statements like, “I’ll never do that”, “This will never work”, “You always do this wrong” and other such statements will only make you feel negatively about the situation and humiliate or push away other people.
5. Be rational
Anger often stems from a completely unobjective, irrational situation. So calm down, sit back and think about the reason of your anger. Was it rational? Was the other person to be blamed completely?
