8 Things You Must Know About Antidepressants Before Taking Them

5. Not everyone on medication can see immediate results

If you expecting for immediate results, there is more a likelihood of you getting disappointed as not everyone can see immediate results. For some it may take up to a month for any visible reaction to the anti-depressant.

6. Anti-depressants have a lot of side –effects

Some of the side-effects of anti-depressants are dry mouth, nausea, headaches, sleepiness or insomnia, weight gain and constipation or diarrhea. These sides–effects usually begin when you start taking the medicine but pass away in a few days or a week. SSRI’s make you anxious at first and they can sometimes cause longer-term problems with weight gain and with your sex drive. Some can affect your blood pressure and also have fatal reaction with some foods.

7. Anti-depressants carry a suicide risk

People on anti-depressant medicine should be made aware of the fact that the medication carries a huge risk of suicide. They should always be with touch with their doctor or counselors when they get suicidal thoughts or even when they are on the medicine.

8. Never mix alcohol and anti-depressants

A few glasses of wine taken with food is ok, but you should never take other kinds of alcohol when you are using anti-depressants. Alcohol in large amounts normally put you in a depressed state and anti-depressants will be pretty useless.

Never take anti-depressants lightly and never use them without a prescription. They can be pretty dangerous and should only be taken on your doctor’s advice.
