7 Secrets of Successful Single Moms
5. Avoid trying too hard
You are their mother, and while you can fulfill some of the responsibilities that a father does for his kids conventionally, you can’t really substitute his presence in their life. If your divorce settlement allows the kids to meet their father once in a while, let them do it and let him pamper the kids or take their responsibility on some occasions. Don’t try too hard to show that you are a better parent. Your kids’ eyes will never be able to judge who’s a better parent, but will be sharp enough to notice when you try to overdo things and fail at them. Why should you be insecure when the kids are already with you?
6. Give time to yourself
It’s important that you take out some alone time, away from all the madness that your life is filled with. For your own personal mental peace, it is vital that you indulge in relaxation and recreation. That will give you the breathing space to grow and evolve as a person. You are leading a tough and challenging life. It’s okay to pamper yourself once in a while and not think about anybody else for those few moments.
7. Command, not demand
It’s natural for you to expect your kids to understand your position and respect you for what you are doing for them. However, this respect needs to be commanded and not demanded. You cannot be reiterating in front of your kids how tough your life is and that you are going through a lot to give them a happy life. You cannot make them feel indebted. So always be careful of your tone and approach with them. Nobody can help the situation you all are in, so don’t make them feel that you are the one suffering more.
The initial few months seem really difficult when you are trying to raise kids as a single parent. Sometimes, the initial few years throw a lot of unexpected challenges at you. However, as long as you are strong and maintain mental stability, things fall in place soon. Most of the times, your kids will give you answers to all your questions. Be open to them about everything that’s there in your mind, and before you know it, conversations with them will automatically pave way for solutions.
