Oprah Winfrey: What Makes Her Special?
She has been in our lives since 1986. That’s 25 long years! From being born in a poor family in rural Mississippi to a show host, an actress, a producer and much more, Oprah Winfrey is one of the most influential women in the world– let’s see why.
Oprah Winfrey– A Pioneer
‘Venturing into an unknown territory’– is what the word ‘pioneer’ means. Oprah has done just that. Did you know that she is the first woman to own and produce her own talk show? I’ll quickly tell you some of the other ‘firsts’ she has achieved – youngest and first black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV, 1st African American woman to be added to the Forbes billionaire list, the world’s first black billionaires, first woman and the first African American to top Entertainment Weekly’s list of 101 most powerful people in the entertainment industry, the first black person in Businessweek’s America’s 50 most generous philanthropists and also the first to receive the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. There are many other firsts but I think these should be enough to justify the term ‘pioneer’!
Oprah Winfrey– Helping the society
Oprah’s love for making the society and the world a better place to live in, is no secret. Whether it is relationships, spirituality, love, sexuality, charity, women, or politics– Oprah has lent a helping hand in nearly all aspects of society. And whether we like it or not, her work and opinions in the past have had a strong influence on the kind of ideology we have in the society today. If you have been around in the 80’s, I’m sure you remember Oprah’s drive to eradicate the homophobic attitude in America. Do I even need to tell you how openly she has voiced her opinions on war? I remember bursting into tears when Oprah famously invited the victim of a car crash on the show. The woman talked about her ordeal and the way her life had changed. Did that episode hit you like a rock too? Helping people in need, supporting good causes, and using her powers to affect issues that concern the nation– Oprah has stepped up to her responsibility towards America and the world.
