4. Christmas songs of the monks
The monks always had their secret lives and this included singing Christmas songs too when such things were prohibited. Some of the oldest songs can be attributed to the monks who took a lot of biblical themes to write their songs.
5. Handel’s Messiah
The famous song was first performed in Ireland in the year 1742. It was performed a few years later in America and the strange thing was Handel performed it here before he could do it in his native Germany.
We have only a very few songs of Christmas that could be called very old. Owing to the many problems faced by the church and the religious persecutions of different sects, Christmas songs never really took off and it became a fad only around the last century. The most famous song “Silent Night, Holy Night”, sing during all Christmases was only written in 1818 but had remained one of the most famous and most sung songs of all times.
