5. Adopt a new life
What past held for you is something you can not mend. But you can surely adopt a new life, a new pet, of course not immediately after the loss of your pet. Let your emotional turmoil rest, take your time and then adopt a pet. This is not to say that it can replace your earlier pet. No loss can ever be replaced, but it can be your companion during such hard times and gradually will become a part of your life.
