How To Deal With Baby Blues?

7 to 10 days after delivering their baby, nearly 80% women go through an emotional phase in their life. This phase makes them cry, weep, feel moody, fatigued and depressed. All these symptoms are that of baby blues or what is called ‘maternity blues’ or ‘postpartum blues’.

Although the first few days after childbirth seem euphoric, a few days later, women tend to feel pity for themselves as also experience feelings of anxiety, tearfulness, irritability and nervousness. They also feel extremely tired, weak and notice a lack of sleep. The causes behind baby blues are both physical and psychological. However, the most important reason behind baby blues are the hormones that reduce their functioning after childbirth. The reduced activity of hormones and shift in hormone levels tend to make the mother feel depressed and nervous. Also, the physical challenges and labor that a woman goes through while delivering her baby make her feel fatigued. The process of childbirth is a matter of a few hours to a few days but a woman’s transition from being ‘just a woman’ to being a ‘responsible mother’ is a bigger one, and a tougher one to handle. Plus, women take some time to adjust to the baby, to the new routine and also worry about the well-being of their new born. As a result, they tend to experience baby blues.
