Emotional Problems You may Face With an Adopted Child

The need for a child drives majority of the couples to adopt one. However, as the adoption process itself is a tedious one, post adoption period is as difficult as that. You may have to face many emotional issues with an adopted child. Check out 5 common emotional problems you may face with an adopted child.

1. The lack of ‘parent’ feeling

One common emotional problem that adoptive parents face is the lack of feelings, that of parents, towards the adopted child. The entire adoption procedure, legal outcomes and the sudden inclusion of a new member may make parents feel a bit detached from the child. They even question if they love the child or rather love them enough. Lack of support or role models can also make them face this emotional problem.

2. The response to outsiders

Some parents find it very disturbing when it comes to responding to picky questions from outsiders or even relatives regarding adoption. They may also fear if the child will be subjected to unpleasant comments or questions from others. The initial few years can be an emotionally upsetting time for the adoptive parents. So, it is very important to prepare for such questions beforehand.

3. Depression issues

After adoption, some parents suffer from post-adoption depression syndrome. This happens because the realities of parental responsibility suddenly come in and they are unable to cope with it fully. Moreover, the sleep pattern is disturbed and they constantly worry if they can be at their best. Also, certain behavioral issues in the adopted child can also trouble the parents leading to depression.
