Do’s And Don’ts Of Photography

Don’ts

Don’t reduce resolution

You should use the maximum possible resolution your camera can offer. You did not buy the camera to use it with limited functions. So max out the resolution – maybe someday you want to project your beautiful pictures on a wall. I know that this is going to mean a lot more storage capacity and lot more processing time. But trust me, it will all be worth it when you are showing off your favorite landscape photograph to your friends on your big HD television set.

Don’t use digital zoom

We all know what digital zoom does to your pictures – it ruins them. It is easy to forget that digital zoom is not the real zoom, optical is. If you must blow up the picture, I suggest that you do it on your computer during processing. Optical zoom is the way to go and you should also keep an eye out for that salesman pitching you to go for a camera that has x times digital zoom – don’t buy it. Optical zoom is a photographer’s best friend.

Don’t be stingy about cards

High resolution pictures consume a lot of memory. The last thing you want to be worried about is less memory space. I have had those moments of “Honey, I can’t take your picture right now because I need to transfer the pictures from my memory card to my laptop so I can have more space blah blah blah”. Memory cards are cheap these days and you have a lot of options. CF, Micro SD and SD are some of the varieties in the market and there are many deals out there which say ‘two for the price of one’. Go get it.

Don’t press for posing

“Susie, put your arm around John”, “Mike a little more to your left”. “Hey squeeze in everyone”, “Can we all spare a minute to get this perfect picture”, “Tim, I want you to smile. Tim, Smile!” Yep, you get the message, don’t you? Don’t keep pushing people to pose. It is annoying. I would also suggest that when you are spending quality times with family, friends, or loved ones, try not to get too carried away. Sit back, relax and enjoy the moment while you can.

There you go. These are my top do’s and don’ts for photography and sticking to these basics have made my experience as a photographer much better, and I reckon they’ll make yours better too. Have a great shot!
