6 Facts About Artificial Tanning
A tan, whether you get it by basking in the sun or at tanning salon, isn’t always great news. And tans from tanning lamps can equally spell trouble for your skin. No matter what someone tells you, or how much you would love to get yourself tanned, it is better to know these facts before hand.
1. Group 1 carcinogen
The International Agency of Research on Cancer has recently stated that ultraviolet radiation (the kind found in tanning beds) fall into Group 1 carcinogen, the same classification as cigarettes, asbestos and arsenic.
2. Base tan is not helpful
Many people believe that a base tan would protect you from getting sun burnt. It is not true. A base tan only provides a sun protection factor (SPF) of 2 to 4. Whereas, an SPF of 30 is a minimum recommendation by dermatologists. A base tan can only damage your skin and help in no other way.
3. Tanning can be an addiction
Studies have shown that tanning causes the release of endorphins in your brain – the same reaction that is triggered by heroine, cocaine and methamphetamine. Hence, you may decide to get a tan just once, but soon it will turn into an addiction which you will end up repeating again and again.
