6 Ways to Deal with a Clingy Child

6 Ways to Deal with a Clingy Child

Many kids remain dependent on their parents at an age when they should ideally be doing things by themselves. If you feel that you want to help your clingy child to become independent, read the tips below.

1. Keep your kid preoccupied with as many activities as possible

Your child could be constantly clinging to you because he/she has nothing else to do. If your child is whiling too much time away, he/she is bound to tag along with you wherever you go. Schedule activities as per your child’s interest in such a way that he/she will stay occupied and won’t think of being with you all the time.

2. Get your child to meet more people

Is your child spending most of his/her time inside the four walls of your house? If this is the case, then your child may grow up to believe that you are the only one to interact with. To avoid this, expose your child to other members of your family, some neighbors or kids of similar age. Show your kid that there is a world beyond the four walls of your house. Social engagement will allow your kid to become less clingy to you.

3. Get your child checked for symptoms of illness

If your child is very young and demands to cling by your side all the time, there could be something wrong with him/her. It could be anything – a stomach pain, depression due to peer pressure at school or any feeling of emotional, mental or physical discomfort. To get to the root of what is making your child clingy, run him/her through some basic checkups with your family doctor to rule out any illnesses.
