8 Ways to Get Your Child to Read More Books

5. Tell them how reading helped you in your life

To get your children to read more books, keep telling them how your habit of reading helped you in your life. Use practical instances to show them the importance of reading. For example, tell them how you knew an answer in your college tests just because of your reading hobby. Show them how reading can be beneficial in life.

6. Link reading books to a reward

You could use the age old reward trick to get your child to read. For example, you could promise your child that you will take him/her to watch movies next month if at least 2 books are read in this month. And don’t just take their word for it, ask them to tell you the things that they read about.

7. Plan to spend a family day in the library

If you are really serious about getting your kids to read, you could spend a few hours at the library on a holiday. Use a Saturday or Sunday to take your kids to the library or a bookstore and let them spend hours in the children’s books area. Allow them to flip through pages of books that interest them and once they are tired, you could all go out for lunch. Trips like these will cultivate a reading habit in your children.

8. Make a small book shelf in your child’s room

Dedicate an entire shelf in your child’s room as one that will be used to keep books only. Every book that you buy for your children can go on that shelf and in no time it will start filling up with all sorts of reading material. Your child is likely to pick up a random book to read when he or she is bored and has nothing else to do.
