8 Ways to Discipline Your Child
5. Don’t get manipulated
Kids are innocent, but at the same time they can be pretty manipulative too. If you deny giving chocolates to him, he might tell you things like ‘Dad always gives it to me because he loves me. You don’t love me’ and stuff like that. Don’t give in to such manipulations. Just understand that he’s a kid and he will do anything to get what he wants.
6. Be firm but not strict
Be reasonably firm but not unnecessarily strict in enforcing discipline. Let him know that ‘no’ means ‘no’.
7. Help him understand the concept of ‘consequences’
Your child is young and often fails to understand the relationship between causes and effects; actions and consequences. So you need to sit with him and help him understand in simple and clear language. For example, ‘If you hit mom, mom will get hurt and may need to get admitted to hospital’. Explain the consequences of actions clearly.
8. Involve him in making rules
Let him know what rules he needs to adhere to. Involve him by telling him why it is important to have such rules. Let him know the long term advantages and benefits of following rules. The younger the child, the simpler your language should be while explaining and giving examples.
No matter how undisciplined your child might be, but never hit him. That is no solution. Your child deserves your love and understanding the most. So, always be patient and supportive when it comes to teaching discipline to your child.
