5. Switch off when not in use

Switch off appliances when not in use. In many households, no one cares to switch off the television when no one is watching. Also, lights and fans are kept running when a room is empty. Equipment which have plugs like radio and battery charger must be plugged in only when they are used.

6. Use LED lights instead of light bulbs

Conventional light bulbs consume plenty of energy as compared to the modern LED/fluorescent lights. The amount of electricity required to run one incandescent light bulb is enough to run about 5 – 10 LED lights. Also, LED lights are more beautiful and give off a soft illumination and more even light, besides being energy efficient.

7. Unplug modern electronics when idle

Many modern electronics come with a feature where they switch on automatically. They have a modern instant-on technology which makes them easier to use, but at the same time consume excessive electricity. So in order to save energy, unplug such machines when they are not in use.

8. Take advantage of off-peak reduced rates

Take full advantage of the off-peak reduced rates of electricity. Normally, the off-peak hours run from 10 PM to 6 AM. So, make full utilization of these hours as much as you can to save on your energy bill. Appliances like heaters (which consume a lot of energy) and automatic washing machines can be used during such off-peak hours to make their full utilization.

If you want to keep a check on your budget and not end up spending excessively on your energy bill, you should employ these methods. Savings on your energy bill also means less consumption of electricity, which in turn means doing good to the planet as well!
