8 Common Misconceptions About Only Children
5. They get lots of attention
Well, an only child should get the undivided attention of his/her parents. However, it is not always the case. There are several only kids who fail to get the necessary attention from their parents owing to the parent’s busy schedule and varying priorities. In such cases, it is also quite possible that an only child might suffer from a lack of attention since he/she does not even have a sibling to give him/her company.
6. They crave attention
Again, you cannot generalize such things. If a child craves attention, it is more of a personality trait than anything else. It has very less to do with the fact that he/she is an only child. In fact, there are many cases where first-borns crave for attention after a second child is born.
7. They are very independent
There are many people who have a misconception that only children are self-reliant and often turn out to be alpha males and females. They are thought to be more independent than those who have siblings. However, this is not true in all cases. There are many only children who are entirely dependent on their parents for everything.
8. They are materialistic
People assume that an only child has the luxury of having all his/her demands met. This is the basis for the assumption that such kids are materialistic. However, not all only children have wealthy parents who can spoil them. Also, not all wealthy parents spoil their only children by giving them everything that they ask for.
