7 Risks Involved In A Cesarean Delivery

In the last three decades, research reveals that the number of women opting for a cesarean delivery or c-section, as it is usually known, has increased remarkably. To ward off the pain that is caused due to vaginal birth or to avoid complications or upon the advice of their gynecologist, many women go ahead with a c-section assuming that the surgical process is much better than its natural counterpart. They fail to realize that a cesarean section does involve its own risks. After all, it’s a surgical procedure. Enlisted below are some such risks involved in a cesarean section.

1. Infections

A cesarean birth takes place when an incision is made in the abdominal wall and the uterus to deliver a baby. During the process, there are chances of infection at the site of the incision, in the uterus or near the urinary bladder.

2. Blood Loss

During the surgical procedure, there are chances of excess blood loss which may result in anemia. Many women also have to go through blood transfusion.

3. Injury

The bladder and bowel tend to get injured during the surgery, at times.

4. Bowel Dysfunction

The surgery affects the bowel in such a way that it disrupts bowel movement for several days post-surgery. This also leads to discomfort, bloating and distention.

5. Adhesions

During a cesarean section, there are chances of formation of scar tissues inside the pelvic area which may cause pain and blockage. It may also lead to complications during later pregnancies.
