7 Facts About Eating Disorders

5. Treatment seeking is very low

Many people try to hide their eating disorders from their family and others. Some are very successful and their disorder can go undetected for years. They do not seek treatment and even if they are forced to do so, they try everything to get away from it. Also it is difficult to find enough places that specialize in eating disorders.

6. Unhealthy ways to stay thin

Some of the unhealthy ways to constantly stay thin adopted by many are smoking cigarettes, using laxatives, skipping meals, vomiting and fasting almost every day.

7. Gender stereotypes

Men also form a large percentage of people suffering from eating disorders, but not many come forward to get treated because of the stigma attached with the disease and the gender stereotypes. Being a man makes it much more difficult for them to admit it to themselves that they could have an eating disorder much less admit it to others.

Eating disorders are not age specific or gender specific. Anyone can suffer from one of the three main eating disorders. They have painful repercussions and can also lead to death when not treated at the right time. Help is easy to get when the patient realizes the harm that he or she is causing to their body.
