4. Diyarbakir Prison, Turkey
This Turkish facility is so brutal that inmates are killed before they can commit suicide. Prisoners are mentally, physically and sexually tortured and abused to death. The living conditions are inhuman. In Diyarbakir, even children are locked up for life imprisonment. The prison has been accused of violating human rights and is known as one of the world’s most sinister prisons.
5. Tadmor Prison, Syria
Tadmor Prison has been cited as a “kingdom of death and madness” due to its insurmountable cruelty over its prisoners. At Tadmor, the prison guards butcher inmates with axes, and starve the non-violent prisoners to death. These monstrous guards then chop up body parts before disposal. In 1980, following an assassination attempt on the then President, commandos were sent to Tadmor and they butchered as many as 500 prisoners as a retaliation and warning to the people responsible.
6. Carandiru Prison, Brazil
This Brazilian prison was known for the sheer number of deaths which was inflicted upon the prisoners. More than 1300 prisoners were killed in a time period of 46 years. During the riots of 1992, inmates who had already surrendered were brutally shot dead in their cells. Another noteworthy fact about Carandiru Prison is that an AIDS epidemic spread so rapidly in it that at one point, one in every five prisoners contracted it. The prison was shut down in 2002 following several human rights violation campaigns and protests.
