6 Unusual Romantic Gestures Around the World
4. May Trees of Germany
This tradition has its roots in the 17th century when it was called Mailehenbrauch. Men in Rhineland, Germany, impress their female partners with a lovely gesture by setting up Birch trees in front of their houses. These trees are arranged for them by their male buddies a day before 1st May and are decorated with crepe paper design, preferably in the shape of hearts.
5. Lovespoons of Wales
Welsh people have an ancient and unique tradition of lovespoons wherein the suitor of a female, seeking to marry her, has to carve a beautiful spoon out of a single slab of wood. This custom dates back to 1660 and the more ornate, pretty and symbolic the spoon is, the more it reflects the man’s love and capability of taking care of the woman he wishes to marry. Nowadays though, Welsh people exchange ready made carved spoons during their engagements.
6. Dragobete of Romania
Romanians and Bulgarians express their love to each other not on the popular Valentine’s date of February 14th, but 10 days later on February 24th. As per their culture, birds are messengers of God and they get engaged in building homes on this day which marks the end of winter. Hence just like the birds, young men and women also profess their love for each other and get engaged.
