6 Tips to Take Care of Your Pearls
4. Wash them
Frequent pearl users ought to wash their pearls once a year. Although professional cleaning is recommended, you can clean them by yourself too. Place your pearls in a plastic jug or jar to minimize handling your pearls and dip it several times in a mild soap solution of a clear liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly in clean water and then place the pearls onto a towel and allow to dry for at least 24 hours before handling them.
5. Limit their usage to special occasions
While wearing a pearl chain, necklace, brooch or earring set to work regularly is fine, limit their usage in rings and bracelets. Your hands do all sorts of work throughout the day because of which these pieces may be subjected to scratching since they sit on your hands all day long. Never wear these pieces when you anticipate working with your hands and limit their usage to special occasions.
6. Restring them
Your fine pearl necklaces should be restrung periodically if you wear them frequently so that the silk or nylon cord holding them is in good shape. Be sure to have each pearl knotted separately, preferably with silk, so they do not rub together and wear on the pearl nacre. If the pearls are very small, knots between each pearl may be undesirable.
