6 Reasons Why Angelina Jolie’s Decision to Get a Double Mastectomy was the Right One
Angelina Jolie recently wrote an article in New York Times to announce that she had got a preventive double mastectomy. The media reaction has largely been positive but there are some critics who think that she did not make the right decision. Here are some of the reasons why most of the media personalities and celebrities are supporting Angelina and saying that she took the right step.
1. She had 87% risk of getting breast cancer
Angelina Jolie’s decision to get a double mastectomy is being looked at by everyone as the right decision mainly because her body has a faulty gene known as BRCA1. This gene gave Angelina an eighty seven percent chance of getting breast cancer. This could be termed as a highly likely chance of getting breast cancer, which is why many medical experts are of the opinion that her decision to get a preventive double mastectomy was absolutely right.
2. Her mother died from ovarian cancer in 2007
Angelina Jolie’s fight with cancer began much before her own preventive surgery. Her mother passed away in 2007 after suffering from ovarian cancer for nearly ten years. Angelina is currently thirty-seven years old, while her mom died when she was fifty-six. Looking at her mother suffer for nearly a decade and going through all that emotional trauma would have influenced her decision to get a double mastectomy.
3. Angelina Jolie is mother to six children
Angelina has openly said that since her mother passed away in 2007, her own children will never get a chance to interact with their grandmother. Because Angelina is a mother of six children, she may be feeling a sense of responsibility to be around and care for her children until they grow up and become independent. Her motherly instincts and the terrifying thought of not being able to see her own children grow up may have influenced Angelina’s decision to get a double mastectomy.
