5 Tips to Prepare Your Shy Toddler for Preschool
4. Let him/her ‘fight’ his/her own battles
Now this may seem too much for the mothers but it’s true that you need to let him/her handle his/her own stuff. So if in a playpen, another child takes the toy away from your child and your kid starts wailing, then don’t immediately rush to help your toddler. Let him/her handle the situation on his/her own. This way he/she’ll learn to be independent and will know how to react in such situations. Of course you should intervene when there’s something that may potentially hurt your child, but otherwise let go and make him/her independent.
5. Familiarize him/her with the concept of ‘preschool’
If you have already zeroed in on the preschool where you want to enrol your toddler, then take him/her there to show the premises. It will help him/her to get acquainted with the place physically and once he/she begins attending the preschool he/she’ll find it ‘familiar’ and ‘known’, which will help him/her settle fast.
Kids have their own way of doing things and it’s not a good idea to rush them into things. Be patient and supportive. Help your toddler along the way but do not help him/her too much else he/she’ll never come out of his shyness! Just be there for him/her and watch him/her take his/her own steps towards independence and confidence!
