5 Side Effects of Coffee On Women
4. Pregnancy
Caffeine and nicotine are two things that are known to have adverse effects, if consumed in excess quantities during pregnancy. Pregnant women should have a maximum of 2 cups per day which provides about 200g of caffeine. Drinking more than this amount has been linked to an increased risk of premature birth, miscarriage and complications during pregnancy. Large amounts of caffeine can also irritate a nursing infant’s digestive system causing irritability. Also, excess consumption of coffee during pregnancy has effects on the baby since he/she passed through the placenta. The developing baby does not have the ability to break down the coffee as efficiently as an adult, resulting in caffeine being stored in the baby’s body for a long time causing harm.
5. Miscarriage
A number of studies done recently suggest that caffeine has a direct effect on miscarriage. Women who drink large amounts of coffee during pregnancy are more susceptible to miscarriage than others. Thus it is wise to cut down on your coffee intake to protect yourself and your child during pregnancy. Restrict yourself to 2 cups a day and if possible give it up completely to avoid any problem.
Women on the pill should definitely watch the amount of coffee going into their system. The caffeine combined with the contraceptive can cause nervousness, headaches etc. Though it is well known that most women cannot start their day without their regular cup, it is better to be safe than sorry. Try for better alternatives such as decaf or restrict your coffee consumption to 2 cups a day. Also if you can, try and completely wean off coffee for a healthier lifestyle.
