10 Sources of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also popularly known as the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’, thanks to the ability of the body to automatically produce it from cholesterol in the presence of sunlight. But that does not mean that our diet should be devoid of vitamin D. Especially in today’s times, when most of our time is spent in the closed spaces of concrete jungles, the exposure to sunlight is not enough. Besides, with all the news of damage the UV rays can do to our skin, it is safer and better to include the following food items in your diet to ensure sufficient supply of vitamin D to your body. Enlisted here are some rich sources of vitamin D.

1. Fish

Fish like salmon, mackerel and tuna are rich sources of vitamin D, especially the wild variety of salmon. Hence, daily intake of salmon is more than sufficient to provide the required amount of vitamin D to the body. Other varieties of canned fish also contain vitamin D but in lesser amounts. Light tuna not only contains a good amount of vitamin D but also has very less mercury content making it safe and healthy for consumption. Fish also contains other essential minerals like calcium which are equally vital for the body, reason enough to stuff your fridge with it.

2. Milk

For all the vegans fuming out there, here is a bit of solace. There never was and never will be such a wonder drink like milk. Whether you prefer whole, skimmed milk or fortified milk, it is sure to do a whole lot of good to your body due to its rich vitamin D content. So unless you are lactose intolerant, just drink away to your heart’s content.

3. Eggs

Two eggs a day is recommended for a healthy body as apart from vitamin D, eggs also contain a host of other vital minerals and proteins which are required for the functioning of and building the body.

4. Cod liver oil

This is the richest source of vitamin D. Extracted from fish, a tablespoon of cod liver oil a day will take care of the body’s vitamin D requirements.

5. Cereal

The fortified cereal available in the market should be the preferred breakfast of any health conscious individual. But as the vitamin D content varies from product to product, it is advisable to check the packet before purchase.
