1. Sarah Josepha Hale and Thanksgiving
Sarah is more famous for penning “Mary had a little lamb” than being the pioneer of Thanksgiving but it was actually her campaign spanning over two decades that finally culminated in Thanksgiving being declared a national holiday in 1863.
2. The Proclamation of Thanksgiving
Sarah Hale’s letter made Abraham Lincoln to think and he finally declared the last Thursday of every November as a Thanksgiving holiday by issuing a proclamation to that effect.
3. The Thanksgiving cuisine
Sarah Hale should be inducted into the Thanksgiving Hall of Fame not just for helping to make it a national holiday but also for the inception of the delicious Thanksgiving cuisine. She divulged a lot of Thanksgiving recipes through her editorials which included pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce and of course, the good old turkey.
4. The menu at the first Thanksgiving
There is enough evidence to suggest that turkey was nowhere to be found in the menu when Thanksgiving was first celebrated in America in 1621. The party goers apparently had a soft corner for venison, corn and fish.
