Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
Priest life
It is reported that he had visions and heard voices of Irish people calling out to him to come to their land. He preached Christianity widely in Ireland and baptized thousands of people while he was alive. His evangelism is accounted for almost 30 years. It is known that he used Irish people’s beliefs and faiths to make them understand what Christianity is in easily comprehensible forms.
However, his full mission is not recorded anywhere officially, and all his good deeds were documented only after he passed away.
March 17th – Official Feast Day
St. Patrick died in AD 493, following which March 17th became an official holiday and people began to celebrate this day to pay respect to the holy saint. As time evolved, St. Patrick’s day was made an official feast day in the early 17th century and until recent times it’s popularity was not so huge.
Recently St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated through parades, dying the rivers green and drinking alcohol. Though these ways in no account show respect to the cultural background of St. Patrick’s Day, people enjoy the holiday to their fullest. There are also several sports events conducted during this time to celebrate the holiday.
