9 Tips for Dealing With Explosive Children
It sometimes becomes very difficult to parent a child that has anger issues or is extremely short-tempered. Not only does it create a bad environment at home but can also lead to some embarrassing moments when you are out in the public. We give you some of the tips for dealing with such explosive children.
1. Catch the warning signs of anger
You must realize the early signs of your child’s anger. Some of the common signs are clenched teeth, tensed body, heavy breathing, rise in tone, etc. Once you have recognized them, point them out to your kid. If your kid is aware of all these signs, he/she will be able to figure out an appropriate response for anger before it is too late. Work together with your child as a team to solve the problem.
2. Appreciate it when a child does good
Try pointing out to your child when he/she is being good. If you appreciate the kid at this point, he/she will know what kind of behavior you expect from him/her. This will also reinforce positive behavior. Even at school, teachers can use this technique by making statements like, “I am really glad you finished your homework” or “It was nice of you to help Johnny with his problem.”
3. Avoid arguing when the child is angry
Most parents try to reason with the kid when he/she is angry. This does not help and only leads to a stronger reaction from the child. A better approach is to convey your thoughts and arguments to your child after he/she has calmed down. Your kid will be more open to listening to you and is also more likely to understand what you are saying. Arguing with the child when he/she is angry will only aggravate the situation.
4. Be wary of how you behave when you are angry
Kids often follow the example of their parents. If you lose control when you are angry and start yelling or hitting, then your child will do the same. It is extremely important to check your own behavior and set a good example for your kids. You cannot expect your child to change his behavior if you yourself ‘explode’ every time that you are angry.
5. Offer outlets for the child’s energy
One of the common reasons behind such anger issues is the fact that kids cannot find a proper way to channelize their energy. If you encourage your child to do physical activities, exercises at home and in school, then he/she will find a better outlet for his/her energy and will be too spent to be angry at every little thing.
