8 Common Grammatical Errors
5. Different to vs different from
Some people use ‘different to’, while the correct use is ‘different from’. For example, ‘This is a different color from what I’d seen yesterday in the shop’, rather than ‘this is a different color to what I’d seen yesterday in the shop’.
6. Ending a sentence with a preposition
This is a common error. You can construct your sentence in this way if you are writing in a conversational tone. But otherwise, you should strictly avoid it. For example, ‘He kept the book beneath’ is wrong. ‘He kept the book beneath the shelf’ is the correct form.
7. That vs who
The rule here is simple: use ‘that’ for things and ‘who’ only for animate objects like people, animals, etc. For example, ‘that’ will be used in ‘He cheered the team that won’, while ‘who’ will be used when the sentence is ‘ He hates people who smoke.’
8. Than vs then
‘Than’ is used when you want to compare two things, people or basically any comparison that you want to do. To illustrate, ‘Jack is taller than Jim’. ‘Then’ is used for denoting something related to time. For example, ‘I visited the park then’.
If you are planning to choose writing as a career, make sure you totally avoid these errors or might screw your job at hand. All the best!
