7 Biggest Resume Mistakes You can Make

7 Biggest Resume Mistakes You can Make

Writing a perfect resume is important because it reflects your personality and achievements in black and white. Your professional image and reputation can go for a toss if your resume has a few blaring errors. Here are a few resume mistakes that you should avoid in your resume.

1. Lack of a cover letter and other documents

One of the first things you should note is that a resume is not just a single document which you have to email to a potential employer for a job. A resume by itself is considered incomplete unless it is accompanied with a cover letter, letter of application or a document addressing key selection criteria. A cover letter is a document which introduces you as a person and describes how you deem yourself to be fit for a certain role. One of the most glaring resume errors is sending an incomplete resume without a cover letter.

2. Proper names spelt wrong

Spelling mistakes are a big no-no in any professional paperwork, especially a resume. Such errors can become even more glaring when proper names are spelt wrongly. Make sure that you don’t spell names of companies and previous employers incorrectly. If some of these names are well known, your errors will become immediately recognizable. Don’t expect your resume to be read if your potential employer spots even a single mistake in proper names.

3. Using the same resume for all jobs

Many people think that one resume can work for applying to a dozen jobs. But as far as resumes are concerned, one size does not fit all. A resume is all about selling yourself for a particular job. When potential employers read your resume, they will want to know how you can be useful to their company. They will not be interested to go into your career history which does not offer them any insight. Position your resume according to the job for which you are applying.

4. An unprofessional email address

Can you imagine what an employer will think if he or she sees your email address as becool@gmail.com or Ilovemarshmallows@yahoo.com? Having highly personalized email addresses can be a mistake when you are putting them down on a resume. If you don’t have a more straightforward email address, create one just for the sake of your job application.
