10 Disadvantages of a Low Carb Diet
6. Bad breath
The ketones produced in the body due to low carb diet, results in a fruity odor which can be similar to the odor of certain chemicals such as acetone or nail polish remover. Since the main cause of this strange odor is metabolic changes in the body, it cannot be eliminated with conventional breath products. However, drinking lots of water can help in diluting the ketones in your system thereby resulting in relief from the bad breath.
7. Results in kidney failure
Consumption of protein rich foods such as meat, fish and eggs puts excess strains on the kidney, thereby increasing the risk for kidney disease.
8. Regained weight
In the case of low carb diet, the body uses stored fat for energy, which tends to slow down the metabolic rate. As a result of which most of the low carb dieters tend to regain weight in spite of limiting carbs in their diet.
9. Reduced functioning of the brain
According to the Institute of Medicine, the brain requires at least 130 grams of carbohydrates each day for optimal functioning. However, if you are on a low-carb diet, you would consume less than 130 grams of carbs each day, especially during your induction phase. It thus reduces your brain’s functioning capability by refraining it from the minimum desired carbohydrates.
10. Unidentified long term risks
According to The University of Maryland Medical Centre, the medical fraternity is not aware of the long term health effects of a low carb diet due to limited research on them. Just like other dietary models, there is an urgent need to establish the effects of low carb diets on adults, children, pregnant women, the elderly and the ones with kidney disease.
